About Dr. Karen Kay

Dr. Kay is a licensed clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst who has been in
private practice since1985.  Her areas of expertise include adult, child, and family therapy
as well as parent education and consultation. She has been an approved supervisor
for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, supervising and training graduate students as well as psychology and marriage and family therapy interns.  Dr. Kay has also taught doctoral students at a professional school of psychology in Los Angeles.

Dr. Kay has a wide range of professional experience in the field of clinical psychology and psychoanalysis.  Her original doctoral degree was granted in 1984 following completion of a five-year program.  During this time, Dr. Kay trained at Bellevue Hospital in New York, working with children and adults. Her final year of this doctoral program was spent working as a full-time clinical intern at Yale University. 

After becoming licensed in 1985, Dr. Kay worked with adolescents and adults in residential treatment.  In addition, she pursued specialty training in family therapy at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic. Dr. Kay was also an instructor in psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard University, worked in a private hospital for adolescents, and maintained a small private practice specializing in adult patients.

Dr. Kay moved to southern California in 1988 where she opened a private practice. She also continued her work teaching and supervising graduate students in the field and became an approved supervisor for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy in 1991. 

While in private practice, Dr. Kay completed a second doctorate in clinical child psychology at The Graduate Center for Child Development and Psychotherapy in Los Angeles to deepen her work with children. 

Dr. Kay is also a certified psychoanalyst, and a member of the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis where she has facilitated a year-long course on contemporary psychoanalysis for students interested in learning more about the field.  In addition she was the facilitator for “The Influence of Attitude in Psychoanalysis,” presented by Michael Clifford, Ph.D., at the 34th Annual International Conference on the Psychology of the Self in 2011.
